Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School
Holy Family Cristo Rey is “The School that Works!” Every student attending the private, college preparatory high school in Ensley earns 70 percent of his/her tuition by working a paid entry-level internship at Birmingham area businesses one day a week during the school year. Students compensate for time spent outside the classroom by going to school for extended days the remainder of the week and for a longer school year than public school students.

Holy Family Cristo Rey Students Learn Ways to Give Back
Students at Holy Family Cristo Rey gathered for a community service fair on February 1st to learn more about volunteer opportunities at various organizations throughout Birmingham.
Students are required to get a total of 10 community service hours each year in order to satisfy the school academic curriculum.
As a part of the Community Fair, representatives from the Firehouse Shelter, First Light Women’s Shelter, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Exceptional Foundation, and New Pilgrim Towers Nursing Home, were present to share more information about the importance of giving back to the community and how volunteering can be mutually beneficial.
Holy Family Cristo Rey Campus Minister and event organizer, Dr. Joshua Coleman, said that he hopes the service fair leaves a lasting impact on the students.
“As Campus Minister it is my sincere hope that The Community Service Fair not only made those first steps easier in terms of fulfilling an academic requirement, but that it plays a small role in teaching our students to become people for others,” Coleman said.

Mission & Ministry, Inc. Grants $350,000 to Holy Family Cristo Rey
Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School announced today that Mission and Ministry, Inc. has awarded a $350,000 grant to the Birmingham-based Cristo Rey Network School.
Holy Family Cristo Rey president, Fr. Alex Steinmiller, said the support of Mission and Ministry is helping support the school mission of preparing young adults for college.
“Our school is addressing the chronic challenge of our age—motivating youth facing tremendous obstacles to realize their dreams through college graduation. The Mission and Ministry grant, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Birmingham, is providing the necessary support for us to meet this challenge. The Daughters understand the challenge and how to meet it,” Fr. Alex Steinmiller said.
The grant from Mission and Ministry will be used to fund a number of school projects including underwriting the cost of operating two Corporate Internship bus routes, underwriting continuing professional development for faculty and staff, purchasing desks for two new classrooms and also paying salaries for two science teachers, one math teacher and the new principal.
